5th and 6th Grade Jazz Mixed Media Artwork

For this lesson, the 5th and 6th graders learned about the connections that can be made between the visual arts and music. They learned about the artist Romare Bearden and how many of his collages were inspired by jazz music. In class, we listened to jazz music and the students created oil pastel and watercolor paintings inspired by the music they heard. They used the colors that came to mind when they listened to the music and the lines and shapes that they heard in the music - slow, wavy lines when the music was slow and quiet and faster, more jagged lines when the music sped up. After they finished the painting, they used found images from instrument catalogs and created their own shapes to make a collage on top of their painting. Their artwork is expressive and beautiful!
