Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade Autumn Scarecrows

This fall, the students learned about how to create both a collage and a landscape painting all in one project! First, they  used crayons to draw wavy and straight lines to create rolling fields. They then used watercolor paint to add color to their fall landscape using the colors that you see during the fall. The students then cut the shapes of a shirt, pants, a head and whatever else they chose out of patterned paper. They glued them together on their landscape painting to create a scarecrow in a field!

7th and 8th Grade Impressionist Trees

The 7th and 8th graders learned about Impressionist painter Claude Monet and how Monet painted what he saw in nature and captured the light and color that he observed. The students spent some time outside and drew a tree from observation. Once it got a little too cold and windy to be outside, they took their canvases inside and worked on painting their tree in the Impressionist style using dabs of paint and many layers of color. They did a wonderful job with their paintings!!

Kindergarten and First Grade Complementary Color Flowers

The Kindergarteners and first graders had the opportunity to get messy and have fun with paint. They learned how to make secondary colors by mixing primary colors together. Then, they cut circles and flower pedal shapes out of the paper they painted and created a collage of flowers. Each flower was a complementary color pair. They did a great job mixing colors!

Pointillism Leaves by the 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders

For this project, the students learned about the unique style of art called Pointillism. In pointillism, artists apply color in many small dots. Instead of mixing colors together, colors were placed next to each other to create the colors the artists wanted. We were treated to many beautiful leaves this fall, so we used the fall leaves as inspiration for this project. We practiced drawing the leaves from observation, then used the pointillism technique to add color to them. They look beautiful!

Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade Name Zentangles

The third, fourth and fifth graders started the year by creating Name Zentangle drawings. They came up with a drawing that represented themselves in some way, added their name using tracing paper and a transfer technique, and filled in the letters and other spaces with Zentangles. To make a Zentangle, you use a variety of lines and shapes to create unique patterns. They did an amazing job with these projects!!

Kindergarteners, 1st graders and 2nd graders are off to a great start!!

This month, we welcomed the Kindergarteners to the art room! We also welcomed the 1st graders and 2nd graders back after a lovely summer.  We have been busy learning about all of the different ways to make art. For our first project, we learned about different kinds of lines and shapes and how artists like Wassily Kandinsky made beautiful paintings using only lines, shapes and colors. The students made their very own paintings using lines, shapes and colors, just like Wassily Kandinsky. Here are some of their paintings!
